Based in the Forest of Dean, David Cummins operates Professional Horticulture offering gardening services to clients in and around the area including Herefordshire, Gwent, Monmouthshire, Powys, Gloucester and Cheltenham.
David was born and brought up in the rolling Wiltshire countryside. Growing up with a farming background, it was natural that he wanted to follow that career. After looking after the vegetable garden and cutting the lawn however, farming soon turned to horticulture.
He trained formerly at Lackham College, studying Amenity Horticulture for three years. During that time he also trained as a craftsman gardener for his local authority. After gaining valuable experience in all aspects of Horticulture, David went on to study and work in the area of fine turf culture, gaining knowledge and experience on bowling and golfing greens. He then spent the next 18 months in arboriculture working as a tree surgeon.
David’s love of gardens and plants was never forgotten. After taking a diploma in garden design with the Institute of Garden Design, he spent six years as a soft landscape foreman with Peter Dowle.
During his career David has worked on a one to one basis with some of the most prestigious designers and horticulturalists including, Chris Beardshaw, Diarmuid Gavin and Sarah Eberle. He has worked as a plantsman for teams that have won five gold RHS medals at the Chelsea Flower Show and one gold RHS medal at the Hampton Court Flower Show, whilst also achieving silver and silver guilt medals.
His work has ranged across small town houses to large country estate projects. David is a member of the Institute of Horticulture and a member of Rated People. By providing a personal and professional approach, horticulture will continue to be well represented.
The layout and functional properties of a garden are a truly personal reflection of who and what you are. Getting it right is important. David offers a complete design solution or simply a re-design of existing parts of your garden. For larger projects he can offer all the services of a dedicated garden designer.
Planting and Planting Plans
Choosing the right plant for the right place is often overlooked. It is easy to get enthusiastic about colours and form without considering what is really required. By looking at the aspect, soil conditions and other factors, David can draw on 20 years of knowledge to find the perfect solution. He can source the chosen plants whether they are a single specimen tree, your favourite plant pots outside the front door or a complete planting scheme.
Specialist Pruning
Getting the most from your garden often comes down to the care and attention that plants require. Correct pruning at the right time will influence the garden’s appearance. The art of pruning is specific to each species of plant. Whether you want the cosmetic shaping of a specimen tree or a full rejuvenation prune of a collection of roses, David’s experience will get the very best from your plants.
Renovation
If you have a favourite border that has overgrown or needs to be brought back to life, David can advise you on what needs to be done. Planting may need to be re-sited to provide more structure or better positioning within the area, or it may need renewing. The planting that may have been inherited from previous occupants may not suit the style of planting you wish to introduce. The style of planting could also reflect the house you live in. A contemporary urban house may not suit a cottage garden, whilst a rural thatched dwelling may not suit a modern slick planting scheme.
Maintenance
Unfortunately there are no gardens that require zero maintenance. The amount of maintenance time a garden needs depends on the choice of hard landscaping materials, the species and number of plants. David offers a single visit or a regular maintenance contract for your garden.
Consultancy
David offers a consultation before any work is carried out or a written report for any on-going work.
Lawn Care
There are many specialised tasks and techniques used to achieve a great looking lawn. Many small cultural methods can make the difference between an unkempt and dysfunctional lawn that can’t be used, even in summer, and a lawn that can be used all year round. David can analyse your lawn and details it’s nutritional requirements, providing one off specialist treatments or all year round programmes.
Tree Work
Correct pruning has a direct influence on a tree; both its physical health and its appearance. Correct timing and methodology are very important. David offers Winter and Summer pruning for fruit trees and shrubs, and cosmetic pruning for ornamental trees through out the year. If you have a tree that requires a large amount of surgery or is problematic, then he can offer the services of a dedicated tree surgeon.
Dave has come to our garden many times over the past years – from the early stages of working with the designer, planting all the shrubs and perennials over a number of weeks to coming back for the odd day or two to help with those key jobs of getting the gardens ready for Spring or Autumn. Dave’s passion for plants and gardens is evident. He works effectively and quickly, but he has always shown great care and attention to the plants and the work done. We would highly recommend him.
As a Gardener, he is a joy to work with. He is knowledgeable and skilful, with an ability to engage in all things related to the garden. As a person, he's thoughtful, diligent and caring. Unlike some of us, he has a calm energy, which helps him pursue the task at hand (whatever the weather). There is also a respect for the wild life, which in hand goes with a mindfulness of how best gardens can blend with the indigenous landscape. David is a very likeable and intelligent gardener.
Dave has been looking after 1 Lansdown Terrace garden for the last two years. I am most impressed with his passion and energy he puts in to maintaining the garden. There is a great sense of pride and professional with Dave. He is also very resourceful in finding solutions to problems. He loves what he does and that shows.
I was so pleased with the first garden that Professional Horticulture landscaped for me that when I moved house, I asked David back without any hesitation. I have recommended Professional Horticulture to friends and they have also been very happy with the result. David is very friendly, reliable and highly recommended - even by a demanding customer such as myself!
Please get in touch with Dave Cummins about any work that you think Professional Horticulture will be able to undertake. We are happy to provide a free consultation regarding your enquiries.
